right now? >> it has everything to do with it. it goes on the same lines of the federal government trying to take over our rights. >> we're going to have a tea party come on out. >> reporter: and they did that. a large group gathered on pollute 40 after this meeting. this is senator cardin's last town hall meeting to talk about healthcare reform. but he says he'll continue talking to constituents in the fall. that is when congress will reconvene to consider specifics of the legislation. a man is cleared in a baltimore rape after his dna evidence fails to match the crime. 45-year-old marlo humbert was arrested in may last year after being arrested in a photo lineup. he was charged with the rape of a charles village woman. but after checking dna evidence, all charges against humbert have been dropped. the dismissal of reckless endangerment charges against five school counselors will stand. 17-year-old isaiah simmons died after being restrained by staff

members at the prep school. five counselors were accused of waiting 45 minutes before calling 911. today, maryland's second highest court upheld the decision to let the charges remain. alex demetrick reports, a family of six now faces the hard job of rebuilding. it took 85 firefighters an hour to bring the blaze under control yesterday afternoon. another two hours to put the last of it out at this large home near tweenstown in queen anne's county. there are things they will never be able to replace. my daughter. the only thing she was other than -- was concerned about was her baby blankets. and she gets teary-eyed every time. talking about that. >> a lot of memories. >> photos. >> all gone. everything is gone. >> reporter: no one was injured in the multiple alarm fire. but getting water onto it

wasn't easy. >> was an issue yesterday. water had to be truck the here to the scene. >> reporter: no one was home when the fire started, except the family's pets. >> reporter: two dogs managed to get out. a third ran the wrong way. >> one of them ran right through the house and came out the back. well, the other one, he got scared when he got in there and went right to the hottest part of the house, buried himself. and a young firefighter went in there and pulled him out. >> reporter: investigators have not yet determined what started the fire or what broke out. it claimed the home and a new rv. preliminary damages place the loss at $1 million. throughout the day, a steady stream of relatives and neighbors have been coming to the sullivans' aid, who spent the past decade, building their life here. and must now find the strength to do it again. >> yes. we're trying. friends and family. you know? can't ask for anything more. and we have a lot of that. >> thank you. thank you so much. we met some of our neighbors. and come down and help us out. and brought coolers.

and just good people. >> good people, pulling together at a very bad time. alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. because of the extent of the damage, investigators cannot begin their job until debris is removed by heavy equipment. it's not exactly cool outside. but it's not nearly as hot as the beginning of the week. here's a live look outside. showers headed our way. bob turk has a look at the updated first warning forecast. all right. we do have some shower activity. not right here, now. but there is a lot to our east and to our west. take a look at radar. a whole batch here on eastern shore. particularly around dover down to henderson. denton, easton. pretty heavy shower activity. some reporting an inch or more in an hour or two. they seem to be dying out just a bit. from trappe. another batch out to the west of us. most of this in the mountain areas this. is heading out to the east. it's possible in the baltimore region. might see a few showers and

thundershowers. one or two beginning to pop up right now. south of the city. there's one right there. as you can see, not too far from the airport. south of dorsey and another one as you saw just to the south of our region, down by washington. so we have a chance in the next few hours of getting shower activity across the baltimore area in washington as well. maybe you folks in anne arundel county have this stuff heading in your direction. still keep that in the forecast. looks like it's going to stay rather humid around our region. bernadette joins me now with a look at the tropics. once again, we're tracking activity in the eastern atlantic. >> authority. -- that's right. a tropical depression getting started. latest came in as a tropical depression. the storm is making its way to the west at 12 miles per hour. and as it does, looks like it's going to move into a more favorable area for development. if this were to happen, and winds get up to 39 miles per hour. it would become our first named storm of the year, and that would be ana. we'll have a complete forecast

an anne arundel county woman has broken. -- broken in. to top it off, she sees those items in a yard sale. suzanne collins reports, that neighbor has been charged with theft. >> reporter: there are a few items still in a cart in front of david perdicone's office. the 46-year-old is out on bail. charged with breaking and entering her home charged with stealing stuff and selling it. >> i thought it was going to go to waste. i wasn't thinking right. but i'm thinking, i'm going to get these things before they go, you know, to the trash people, you know what i mean? i know it don't make sense. but i wasn't thinking right.

>> the neighbor called police when she came home after a long time away, then noticed all of the stolen belongings. then she glanced down the street and told police she saw her things being sold by perdicone. >> even the man selling at the yard sale had on one of her t- shirts. >> it was estimated that the property stolen was around $25,000. items as large as kitchen appliances and numerous items in the home. >> reporter: in an interview, perdicone said he wasn't thinking clearly, because he had been taking drugs daily with a friend. until recently when he quit. >> next thing you know, i'm doing drugs every day with her. and my money has gone out. i lost all of my money. and i'm on the edge of losing my house mow. >> reporter: -- now. >> reporter: the victim did not return a message left with a relative. her house has a for sale sign in the window. suzanne collins, wjz eyewitness

news. >> perdicone was released on $8,000 bond. we're following breaking news for you right now. an accident. >> we are on i-95, south of route 22 in aberdeen, where it looks like a truck has rolled over and lost a trailer that it was towing behind it. it appears that initially, this was an accident with rescue. you can see the truck had overturned. it is not clear at this point how severe the injuries were to the occupants of the vehicle. nor whether they were transported to a local area hospital. but we do have two lanes southbound of 95 now, completely blocked as police clear away the wreckage and continue their investigation. the backup extends for about two miles. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you very much, captain mike perry, sky eye chopper 13. let's check on the other traffic with sharon gibala. >> hi, sally. we're also following that accident. here's another look at it from a different perspective from our traffic camera there. it is 95 southbound at route 22. blocking two left lanes. backup to havre de grace. and you're looking at route 40

in a trash container with the lid tightly shut, this litter of puppies plays as if nothing happened. >> had hay not been found -- they not been found when they were, i don't think they would have made it. >> reporter: breanne is in charge of the organization charged with the puppies' adoption. she said two men found the puppies in a locked trash can notwithstanding. -- monday. and it was more than 100 degrees outside. some of the puppies looked weak. >> someone meant to put puppies in a closed container on a 100- degree day. if they're depressed and things like that, there could be neurological damage done. >> reporter: this is just one of the cases. the city's animal rescue shelter says this 8-month-old kitten was set on fire. they threw rocks and bricks at her. and when she managed to get the fire out, animal workers say she lit her on fire again.

back in may, this pit bull puppy dubbed phoenix, was doused with gasoline and set on fire, too. animal workers tried to nurse it to health. but days later, the kitten was -- was put back down. >> they could have taken it to a pet store, shelter, could have tried to find homes for them. this is just total disregard for life in general. >> reporter: according to the vet, so far, so good for the puppies. they're only about seven weeks old. and they'll be monitored for the next week. after that, they'll be eligible for adoption. in port deposit, i'm gigi barnett. wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you, gigi. all of the puppies will be spayed and neers. and homes are being located for them. i have a feeling, homes are already determined for those puppies. >> i think gigi is claiming one. we have a look at temperatures now. north winds at 6. barometer 29.99.

let me show you a radar. just beginning to see some activity around the local region. most of it, as you can see, a lot of it on the eastern shore, in delaware, southern jersey. particularly down around seafarer over to cambridge. heavy stuff down there. dover down to henderson. heavy showers. thunder and lightning. and really heavy downpours. and these are rather slow moving. some folks could see one- to two-inch rain showers. there could be local flooding down there. out to the west, showers, not much in maryland. heavier in virginia and west virginia. around the baltimore region. just found two little showers, one by the airport, dying out. and one south of buoy. along the south of the capital beltway. we'll be watching activity. still a chance we'll see stuff popping up. take a look at temperatures around the area. 70s, out to the west, where we're seeing shower activity. always because of the frontal boundary stalling out. and it's helping to create more

story. most older people take some kind of medication. but now, triple a says those who are medicated often don't know of the dangerous side effects of their medicine. mike schuh is live in north baltimore to explain. mike? >> reporter: well, sally, this study shows that as we age, our general awareness decreases, while the number of medications we take increases. it is a combination not beneficial to a driver. >> reporter: read through this and it becomes apparent that most elderly drivers don't know the side effects of their medicine. >> just one use of potentially impiring medication -- impairing medication can result in increased crashes. >> reporter: three out of four are not aware of the driving dangers. only 18% have received warnings from their doctors ask pharmacists. >> doctors, as well as pharmacists, need to better educate mature drivers on the

possibility impact their medication may have on their driving ability. >> reporter: triple a says it's time to put the brakes on this. >> we expect the problem to grow, unless measures are taken now, to address the issue of medication while driving. >> reporter: so it's one thing to know about the problem. it's another thing to do something about it. >> reporter: triple a recommends, if you are feeling tired, there's no shame in  pulling over to take a nap. >> if you drink coffee, keep in mind, caffeine will only give you a short-term boost in energy. >> overall, older drivers are safer drivers than most. >> today, when you get a prescription filled, you get an information sheet with it, which gives all of the side effects. >> reporter: then there's innery rohan. he's on eight medications. he's still on the road. though born -- >> april 3, 1913. >> you're 96 years old? >> i was 96 last april.

>> and you're still driving? >> yes. >> and he agrees with professionals that they need to better counsel patients. >> when you get a new medication. do you feel you get adequate counseling >> no. not only that. doctors prescribe medication to you. and they don't ask you what you're taking. >> reporter: well, soon, triple a will unveil a website so you can cross check the medications you're taking to see if there are any interactions or to see if there is anything in that medication that will hinder your driving. >> thanks, mike. that study looked at 630 drivers, from ages 56 to 93. and was conducted by the university of alabama. divers continue to search the hudson river for clues. some of the victims of saturday's midair collision were remembered today. vic joins us from the newsroom with details from today's memorial service. nine people died when a sightseeing helicopter collided with a plane over the hudson

river. this morning, a memorial service was held for the five people who died in the crash. their bodies were then flown back to italy. they were part of a larger group who came to new york to celebrate a 25th wedding anniversary. 30 more pieces from the helicopter were recover this morning. they included gauges from the engine a cockpit. >> investigators are trying to piece together what happened saturday. all victims' bodies have been recovered now. it could be a scene from a hollywood movie. two well-dressed men walk into a swanky movie store. pull out handguns and make off with hundreds of millions am charlie d'agata has more on the real-life robbery that may be the biggest haul in british history. >> reporter: amateur video captures bank robbers fleeing a london jewelry store. they drag out a female employee. and she gets away unharmed. then they fire a warning shot, causing panic.

minutes earlier, the well- dressed men with english accents walk in the front door of grass diamonds. they made no attempt to disguise themselves as they pulled out a gun and pulled off what is believed to be the largest jewelry heist in british history. they made off with high-end rings, bracelets and watches. there are the types of extravagant pieces worn by celebrities like paris hilton. >> reporter: the robbers' escape nearly fell apart. they crashed into a taxi on a nearby street. they had two more getaway cars, waiting along the route. >> reporter: police kept details of the heist secret for -- almost a week. but then released this closed- circuit video to expose the robbers. >> if anyone knows who these men are, from looking at the picture, then we'd love to hear from you. and also, if you know where of this jewelry has gone.

>> reporter: six years ago, a robber stole about $38 million worth of jewels. but this time, police say it is very likely the thieves have already fled the country. in london, charlie d'agata, wjz eyewitness news. >> authorities are considering the robbers extremely dangerous. a metro police officer is killed in a motorcycle crash. 32-year-old32-year-old dennis henley junior is hit by a pickup truck, while riding his motorcycle along route 197. henley died while being flown to the hospital. the driver of the truck was not injured. alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash. a carbon monoxide leak is discovered yesterday. one person was treated and released. the other two are being held at the hospital for observation. the hotel will remain closed while the source of that leak is investigated. in tonight's eyewitness news healthwatch, school hasn't even started. but many high school sports teams are getting ready for the upcoming season.

as healthwatch reporter kellye lynn explains, new guidelines are out to stop heat-related injuries. until now, there have been no rules on how long or hard teams can practice in the sun. but for the first time this year, schools are getting some guidance. >> set, go! >> reporter: for many high school teams, preseason practice is already under way. but playing too hard under the summer sun can lead to heat stroke. mike mcquillan remembers collapsing during football practice. >> i was disoriented and i was starting to freak out. >> reporter: michael bar beto got overheated during a high school soccer practice. >> i was nauseous and my head was getting dizzy. >> heat injuries or dehydration injuries are right up there with sprain injuries. >> reporter: last year, 15-year- old max gillpin died from heat stroke during football practice

in kentucky. since 1995, at least 29 high school players have died from heat-relateed illness. the national transportation has put out a guideline. only one daily practice the first week, lasting no longer than three hours. in the second week, double fracan start. but -- double practices can start. but a break of at least three hours must be in there. >> know potential signs of injury. and thirst is the first warning sign. i'm kellye lynn, with healthwatch. thanks, kelly. the guidelines aren't mandatory. but experts hope teens adopt them so kids can compete safely. also, if you combine exercise with a mediterranean diet, you can reduce your risk of alzheimer's disease. they found people who exercised andate a variety of fruits and

hurt. some showers popped up around the region. we got some showers popping up. a lot of stuff east of us. and sun out to the west. right near the baltimore region. from edgewood, down to the south of middle river. downtown. dundalk, glen burnie. down towards severna park. some shower activity is just popping up. and it's call kind of moving southwest to northeast. right along the i-95 corridor. so we'll see some of this activity tonight and probably tomorrow. with more on that, look. bernadette joins me from the outback. not only are we going to look into tomorrow but the next couple of days, if you're headed down into the ocean. here's a look at the forecast. chance for a thunderstorm.

a little afternoon baseball. warm day at the ballpark. it would be nice if they could win one here. and for all the talk about the orioles pitchers, the team's latest talk is about their inability to hit. facing the a's in a three-game finly, jason bergen got the start. landon's powell showed us this. on the court for a two-run home run. and the a's jumped out to a 4-0 lead. oriole lineup was held to just four runs. rod j. davis will rob ty wiggins of the hit. bring on football prea season anyway. ravens take on. an oddation.

i asked about the mental toughness. i believe very composed. i was able to be put under a lot of robber under there. just the type of competition i've been through my whole life. so i think i'm very prepared for any situation. so when i step out on the field, i have all of the confidence in the world. and i know i can kick. >> steve hourka is in. ravens are not opposed to bringing him back. woods feeling better and playing better after dealing with recovery from his knee surgery. meanwhile, trying to compete at this level, which is not easy to do. so i was really trying to rely on other parts of my game well to get me through.
